Treatments

The treatments for blood in the urine depend on the cause of the bleeding.  While there are medicines and procedures available to slow down or temporarily stop the bleeding, the key is to find out what initially caused the bleeding.  For each cause of bloody urine, there are several treatment options.  What specific treatment is best is highly individual.  Various things must be taken into account, such as the amount of bleeding, how long it has been occurring, how much of a risk is present to the health and life of the patient, the general medical condition of the patient, the risks associated with each treatment option, and most importantly, the patient's wishes.

A thorough discussion of the nature of the problem, as well as the risks and benefits of the various treatment options, is carried out with the patient and usually with the patient's family.  The patient's expectations and wishes are made known, and together, we plan a course of treatment.
